ProFusion Proposes Integration of Fusion into Radiation Protection Law
Following the coalition agreement’s clear statement that fusion should be regulated outside of atomic energy law, ProFusion is presenting an initial proposal for how fusion could be integrated into existing radiation protection legislation. Currently, particle accelerators and medical facilities can be approved as so-called installations for the generation of ionizing radiation. Our proposal is to include fusion within this category.
Since this would be more of a clarification than a change to existing law, regulating fusion at the legislative level would require only a single additional sentence.
The foundation for a technical regulatory framework—governing the actual operation of fusion facilities at the sub-legislative level—is to be developed within the BMBF-funded project ReFus.
