Expert Discussion in the German Parliament
Berlin
July 3, 2024
At the public hearing of the Committee on Education, Research, and Technology Assessment, two of our board members, Heike Freund and Hannes Vogel, spoke about an appropriate legal framework for fusion research. The Atomic Energy Act is based on the significantly higher risks of nuclear fission and is not applicable to fusion. While the first demonstration facilities can be approved under the existing radiation protection laws, dedicated regulations will be needed for the first fusion power plants. The other experts at the hearing (Sara Castegini from CFS, Robert Wolf from IPP, and Christian Linsmeier from FZJ) expressed similar views.
